TASK 1 : Typography System
| WEEK 1 | LECTURE | 31/08/2022
Advanced Typography: Typographic Systems
Typographic systems provide a sense of purpose that focuses and directs
the decision-making.
Shape grammar is a set of shape rules that apply in a
step-by-step way to generate a set, or language, of designs.
Axial System:
All elements are organised to the left or right of a single
axis.
All elements are extended from a point of focus.
All elements expand from a central point in a circular fashion.
Grid System:
A system of vertical and horizontal divisions.
Random System:
Elements appear to have no specific pattern or relationship.
Transitional System:
An informal system of layered banding.
Bilateral System:
All text is arranged symmetrically on a single axis.
Modular System:
A series of non-objective elements that are constructed as a
standardised unit.
Random System:
Elements appear to have no specific pattern or relationship.

Advanced Typography: Typographic Composition
Typography Composition in typography refers to the arrangement of
typography layout.
Principle of Design Composition
Fig. 2.1 Principles of Design - emphasis
Principles of Design Composition: Emphasis, isolation, repetition, balance
(symmetry/asymmetry), alignment, perspective, rhythm,
contrast.
The Rule of Thirds: A photographic guide to composition. The intersecting
lines are used as a guide to place the points of interest,
within the given space.
Fig. 2.3 Environmental grid, Typographic design: Form and
communication (2015)
Environmental Grid: Based on the exploration of
an existing structure or numerous structures combined.
Fig. 2.4 Form and movement
Form and Movement: Based on the exploration of
an existing Grid Systems. The placement of a form on a page,
over many pages creates movement. The forms could represent
images, text or colour.

Advanced Typography: Context and Creativity
The first mechanically produced letterforms were designed to
directly imitate handwriting. Handwriting would
become the basis or standard for form, spacing and conventions
mechanical type would try and mimic.
Fig. 3.1 Cuneiform c. 3000 B.C.E.
➥The earliest system of actual writing, written from left to
right and evolved from pictograms.
Fig. 3.2 Hieroglyphs
Early greek (5th C. B.C.E.): Drawn freehand, not
constructed with compasses and rules, and they had no serifs. In
time the strokes of these letters grew thicker, the aperture
lessened, and serifs appeared.
Roman Uncials: By the 4th century Roman letters were
becoming more rounded, the curved form allowed for fewer strokes
and could be written faster.
English Half Uncials (8th C.): In England, the
uncial evolved into a more slanted and condensed form.
Carolingian Minuscule: Capitals at the start of a
sentence, spaces between words and punctuation. It was this
style that became the pattern for the Humanistic writing of the
fifteenth century; this latter, in turn, was the basis of our
lower-case roman type.
Black Letter (12-15 C. CE): Characterised by tight
spacing and condensed lettering. Evenly spaced verticals
dominated the letterform. Condensing line spacing and letter
spacing reduced the amount of costly materials in book
production.
The Italian Renaissance: Newly rediscovered
letterforms Antica. The renaissance analysis of form
that was being applied to art and architecture was directed
toward letterform — resulting in a more perfect or rationalised
letter.

Suggested website for font : Fontshare
Final task - Font Design and Application
First phase -
➥ Research
➥ Sketching : Create
font with Upper case, Lower case, Numbers and punctuation
➥ After sketch,
create it digital. Refine (add shadow etc)
➥ After finish
creating the font, use font lab to generate your font. (Document your evidence, screenshot)
Second phase -
➥ Apply it. Can use
few other typeface for combination with the font you created. The
typeface you create must be DOMINANT.
Example - T-shirt, Poster, Cap, Coaster, Sticker

Advanced Typography: Perception & Organisation
Contrast
Task 2(A) - Key Artwork
Logotype, Signature
Used un any collateral / merchandise
black and white, minor graphical element only
- Research
- Understand the feature you want to highlight (about yourself)
- Characteristic that represent yourself (mind map)
- Experiment
INSTRUCTION
TASK 1 : EXERCISE 1 & 2
TASK 1: Exercise 1 - Typography System
- Size 200 x 200 mm
- Colours: Black and 1 additional colour
- Minor graphical elements
2ND ATTEMPT
I tried to make it simple by only using a little of graphic elements,
and restrict from using only 1 colour.
FINAL SUBMISSION
Final Task 1 - Exercise 1: Typographic Systems
Final Task 1 - Exercise 1: Typographic Systems Grids and Guides
TASK 1: Exercise 2 - TYPE & PLAY
Part 01 : Finding Type
Progress - 14/9/2022
I decided to trace on beef marble because it consist of a lot of
texture and patterns.
2nd choice was to trace at wooden texture, the outcome looks quite
similar to my 1st trace.
Original Image
Wood tracing
Wood Extraction Trace
3rd choice I wanted to try on some different shapes compared to the
first 2, something more round and cute, so I decided to trace on waves.
Original Image
Wave tracing
Wave Tracing Extraction
Refinement of text tracing extraction
Progress - 21/9/2022
1.First refinement, following the marble of the beef, I decided to
keep it thin with shaky strokes
2. For the second tracing, the texture of wood looks kind of similar
with the first one, using also thin lines and strokes to refine.
3. For the third option would be the ocean wave, the shape of the wave
looks cute and round, much different with the first 2 option. I remain
the uneven strokes like calligraphy to make it look more fun.
FINAL SUBMISSION
TASK 1: Exercise 2 - TYPE & PLAY
Part 02 : Type & Image
Progress - 21/9/2022
Scrolling through my Pinterest post to search for inspiration. Got
attracted by the neon colour styling, so I will be doing neon lighting
text design. Here are some of the images I found that it's interesting
to play with.
Image 1
Image 2
Image 3
I decided to go with Image 2, I feel the image tries to bring out the
message of the digital world. Using the title "Digital" as my text. I
tried using the colour scheme in the image which consist of purple and
pink, tested out the font text, the typeface I am using is Krungthep,
which fit more towards the digital aesthetic.
I also added the red neon effect shadow to make it look more popped out.
I used blend tool with specific step option (70 steps) to create the
text effect.
After I'm done designing the text, I move it into Photoshop to test out
the layout to fit in the image. This is the first attempt of the text. I
added some wires to hang on the text.
After the text arrangement has been set, it is now time to test out the
filter which would fit the poster style. I adjusted the hue and
saturation and lightness of it.
Progress - 28/9/2022
After discovering the styles, here are my ideas for the Honors wallpaper
design.
Renewal Of Life -
1ST ATTEMPT
FEEDBACK
WEEK 2 - EXERCISE 1 : TYPOGRAPHY SYSTEM
The use of non-objective elements are overwhelming the
messaging.
Watch the feedback given to others in live sessions and learn.
WEEK 3 - EXERCISE 2A : FINDING TYPE
Still need refinement on the consistency, can remain the uneven stroke but need to make it more smooth to follow.
WEEK 4 - EXERCISE 2A : FINDING TYPE
All good. The text remain the foamy shape and consistent.
WEEK 5 - EXERCISE 2B : TYPE & IMAGE
Throw away the person and the deer. Increase the size of the text and make it a graphical wallpaper.
REFLECTION
EXPERIENCE
For exercise 1, it's a bit restricted to create the layout while need to stick to the system. So I went to search on a lot of examples and reference. I also study the works from classmate and listen to feedbacks given to know the techniques and problem. I tried to create my layout but I was a bit worried that it will look alike with the works done by classmates. I tried to make it unique as possible, but following the system given, there is some parts that I struggle to follow. I know that this is the basic start up for typography, it's very useful for our further task. Surprisingly, the 2nd exercise was kind of fun to me, I get to create text out from an image. I enjoy doing exercise 2 & 3 as it is more free to go. For exercise 3, It's my first time creating text with neon colours and effects, I learned to adjust the colours in Photoshop.
OBSERVATION
For exercise 1, I had to pay much attention to the balance of the system. Even though I had guidelines to follow, but inserting text and the layout makes a huge difference! It seems to be easy to follow, but the balance of it is super tricky. I get to learn how to observe each letter and text with the correct balance, spacing, leading, point size. The restriction to only use a maximum of 2 colours can let me learn to make a clear layout.
FINDINGS
Before the task, I thought that creating a layout is easy, just have to put text and image in. But after completing the task, I found out that even one small text or layout can change the view and balance to it. I know now that typography is a very important part before creating anything! Just like how I moved on to my exercise 2, observing and creating text from a picture, the consistency is very important.
