FINAL PROJECT : CREATING LETTERFORMS
WEEK 9 | LECTURES | 26/10/2022
Having a clear direction, understand the subject matter. Research is key. Having direction in mind to create.
Create sketches, do a lot of research. Reproduce sketch. Process continues until final stage.
| WEEK 9 | PRACTICAL | 26/10/2022
Proposal for final project.
| WEEK 10 | PRACTICAL | 02/11/2022
Chosen Idea : Design for music album
I will proceed with designing with metallic style, solid and strong typography to match its identity.
Music Album Title Research
After observing a few similar music style album, I noticed a few characteristic for the typeface. Most of it contains sharp edges and spiky ends. Which would logically explain the "strong" elements of the music. No matter if it's thick or thin typefaces, the sharp edges would express the vibes of strong and solid.
Thick & Thin typefaces comparison
Thick
Thin
Sketches - rough
The idea I had for the typeface is by looking through the music album, and this is the recent release. The designed typeface matches the title of the music album - deadline. The similarity of the 3 sketches are the spikes and sharp edges.
Effects idea - Hologram/metal
| WEEK 11 | PRACTICAL | 09/11/2022Progress sketches
I made adjustment to the text with shorter spikes and edges, so that it wouldn't look so messy when combining the letters together.

merchandise: poster, lanyard, stickers, cards (ex:poker/postcard)
| WEEK 12 | PRACTICAL | 16/11/2022Progress sketches
After exploring my first idea sketches, I'm really not satisfied with what I've done. I feel the first idea letter font is a very big challenge for me to finish, as the deadline is getting closer and my progress is slow, I decided to reconstruct with a new idea.
Idea- Recreate a letter face with the album idea style : SOWOOZOO ,galaxy and stars

FEEDBACK
Week 10
The sharp edges need to sort out, each letter should be able to pair with each individual letter. Think of the letter combination problem, as the letter is not only being use on the word "deadline" the music album title.
Week 11
consistency. Each letter should be a set, for example C & G/ E & F has the similarity, but the edges and spikes should match. When creating lowercase letter, it shouldn't have a lot of decoration as lowercase is not suppose to be decorative, make it as simple as possible but show the similarity. This week should focus on the application.
Week 12
The punctuation should be the same consistent with the uppercase, put the letters tgt to see if the size works. Can try to make the stroke thinner by a bit. Application can try on something plain and not too many effects on letters it will be very hard to read. Explore more on poster design otherwise it will look like a fan art poster.
REFLECTION
EXPERIENCE
For task3, It's very challenging to start up as I had no experience on making a font. After researching for a lot of different styling, I am very hesitate to choose a style. But it was quite fun as we get to try out styles that we want ! Creating the font with effects is also a very good experience and it is very useful for my future design works.
OBSERVATION
Consistency is the key to complete this task ! I need to compare and put the text together to make sure it doesn't look weird. Although it may look find at the letter separated, but putting a word together make it a new visual. The consistency and balance is a very important element for this task. It is also a bit hard for me to restrict myself by not adding too much complicated element to the font so it won't look messy.
FINDINGS
I never thought of creating a font by myself, it was quite tough and fun at the same time. Now I learned how to create a font and hot export it ! I always thought that creating font is an easy task, but making sure it looks consistent and balance is a huge work.
