EXPERIENCE

It was my first experience to go overseas for a study trip. It was very different compare to a holiday trip. In this study trip, I really get to experience and learn new things during the short 6 days. It was quite fun to do our data collection in a different country. I get to experience talking to strangers with different languages and doesn't understand what were we talking. To do our data collection, we need to pay attention to strangers outfit when we were walking around, taking street photography of fashion is my first experience and I really enjoy it! To explore more different types of fashion, we need to go to few different places, it was also my first time using PASMO card and experience their rush hour. The last train was at 11pm, and that one day after our data collection we did not realise the time and rushed to the last train at 10:55PM, it was just nice to hop on. I also experienced their good manners, Japan people are really nice to talk to, when we were lost in the underground, confuse on which direction to the train, we asked strangers and they were very polite, even a big bow to thank us. On the 5th day, it was our free day and there were a morning snow ! The snow continues until 12PM, and started to drizzle for the whole day, it was a wet day.

OBSERVATION

For data collection purpose, we need to gather their fashion style. Looking at their outfit, I observe that fashion really play a huge role in most of their daily and they really have a very good fashion style. Different location has their unique dress up style, we went to 4 different places to observe their outfit - Asakusa, Ginza, Harajuku, Akihabara. Asakusa, where the culture and traditions gathered at the Sensoji temple, we can see how they immerse their traditional clothing with the modern enhance. Ginza, were all the designer brands, people there dress up with a more classy feel, clean and tidy. Harajuku, a lot of colourful fashion like Lolita and Decora, people in Harajuku dress up very open and free, just like their personality. Akihabara, all the mangas and anime, the street is full of cosplayer ! But sadly it cannot be photographed.

FINDINGS

Apart from their fashion styles, one of the culture shock was that all their shop closes at 8PM. The street started to cool down at 9PM. We were exploring Harajuku at 9PM, the street was empty by that time, the only shop that was open is the Photo Booth. The next thing will be, why are the streets so clean but we don't see much dustbin? I was carrying my trash from Asakusa to Akihabara, finally found a vending machine that is attached with a trash can. One thing I really admire is, they really take trash sorting very seriously, every single piece of trash must be sorted. I hope one day Malaysia can follow this (which I don't think we can).

REFLECTION

After the Tokyo trip, I had gained a lot, not only on the module assignment, but also the things I observe in Japan. One of the behaviour I would really like to learn from Japanese people is that they maintain their city and street very clean, and all the public facilities. Although there are so many people using the public toilet, but it is always dry and clean. I don't want to admit that Malaysia's public toilet is a disaster. I hope one day we don't have to praise other countries' public toilet, so start maintaining our facilities and city clean!

About the module, I appreciate every members from my group. Everyone was participating on the group task and completing it on time. During our exploration in Japan, all of us mix in well and we listen to each other's opinion. After the trip, I realise that time management is the key to everything !
