WEEK 7 | PROGRESS | 8/5/2023

TASK 3A : BOOK

After the content was generated, the next step was to create sample sheet type. This was to see body text, title, half title, subtext, pull quotes in different types.

We had to decide our grid system

I looked up for some layout references to on Pinterest to see how other designers work on their book layout :

WEEK 8 | PROGRESS | 15/5/2023
Then we need to experiment our text layout without any visuals, just focusing on the text.

Figure 3.6a - text layout experiment jpg

After some feedbacks from Mr.Vinod, I changed my font from Source Code Variable to :
Headline - Space Grotesk Light (Bold) 30pt
Body - Space Grotesk Light (Regular) 8pt
Subtext - Space Grotesk Light (Medium) 17pt
Pullquote - Space Grotesk Light (Bold, Skew 15°) 15pt

And I need to rearrange my layout with a gap of 2.5cm for Japanese string binding.

After confirming the fitting and text size, we need to print out to see if the overall fits to our book size. Here is the print out version :

Adding visuals and rearrange the text and double check on the storyline

Figure 3.11b -visual layout attempt

After feedback and rearranging of the visual, I reduced the use of background color to black and beige. I also rearrange the layout more cleaner and neat. I also added a chapter divider before the pull quote.

A few problem from test print to improve:

1. I test print with the 2nd option for my cover, placing the conversation on top of tracing paper, but it didn't work well.

2. I also tried printing it without the underlines on the all the titles to see if it will look better as I'm afraid that the underlines will make the text and layout too packed. After seeing the print out version, I will go with the underline title.

3. My test print version will be using Japanese binding with 2cm gap, but I feel like it is too thick and close to my text in my spreads although I had prepared a 2.5cm gap. I decided to go with 1.5cm gap Japanese binding.

4. My pull quote seems a bit flat, so I decided to add a layer of cutouts on top of the text.

5. The book cover flaps are too short, that doesn't cover the inside spread, it has a 0.5cm difference, so I enlarged a bit of the book cover size.

6. The book itself needs a packaging for it, I decided to make one imitating the depression medical report.

FEEDBACK

Week 7 Check the spacing, fill up black spaces. Beware of island text.

Week 9
Excellent work. Font size and spacing all good. Fill up white space. The page number underline reduce the thickness and add space between the numbers and lines just like my chapter text.

Week 10
Cover : for the illustration create a look through feel adjust the lines, if it don't work then can try with the text only. Bar code background must be white. consider the back page because my next page will be black. if the cover is too plain it doesn't stand out compare to strong design. page : the page number correct all pages with correct spacing. create consistent paragraph spacing chaoter 1 with other chapter. Page 19 text and image too close, image and page number too close. page 22 emphasise text create hyphen to make the spacing even.

REFLECTION

Experience
Week 7 It was a fresh start for me to begin with the basics, not much getting in touch with building grids for layout and story.
Week 9
Catch up using the InDesign tools and manage to work smoothly.
Week 10
Test print on different types of paper, communicating on the outcome. Experienced 2 times of pages mistake they messed up my book pages after completely bind, I have sent my book back to the printing shop twice :/ My first final print was on Wednesday and only can collect on Friday, and then I realise they messed up my pages and return to them, collect on the next day Saturday then realise they did it wrong again, I waited for them to rebind and collect it on the same day.

Observation
Week 7 Using the grid system really makes the layout neat and make it work. It is quite a tough start for me, struggling with the use of gris system and text arrangement. And that is just the start of the process, before even adding any visuals.
Week 9
I manage to improve of my use of spacing and text arrangement, compare it to last week, that I was struggling with the layouts.
Week 10
Different types of paper texture gives different feel and vibe. Even the thickness of the paper will affect the whole book. I test printed on few types of paper and need to decide which is the most suitable material for my book. Because I have quite a few pages that contains black colour, so it's a bit picky on papers to print well on black to stand out the colour.

Findings
Week 7 I have scroll on tons of spread ideas on Pinterest, a lot of interesting spread I would really love to try on if I have the chance to design another book.
Week 9
Colours are so important that it could change the mood and theme of the book. The use of background colour and text colour makes a pair and need to be careful not to use the crash tone, maintain easy readability.
Week 10
The difference between seeing on screen and print out makes a huge difference. Just like my title with underline, when I see it on my screen I thought that it will look packed and crump, but after test print I decided to remain the underline it is good enough.

FURTHUR READING

Important - The grid system helps align page elements based on sequenced columns and rows. We use this column-based structure to place text, images, and functions in a consistent way throughout the design. Every element has its place that we can see instantly and reproduce elsewhere.

Principles of Design-

  1. Purpose: What’s the purpose of the magazine/layout you are working on?
Is it image-based, story-based, formal, funny? etc.
  2. Balance: Make sure your content is evenly distributed over the page/spread. Don’t put too much in one part of the page/spread. Unbalanced layouts will feel uncomfortable and lose viewers interest.
  3. Hierarchy: Do the right pieces of information stand out? Establish what is the most/least important information for a viewer and indicate the levels of priority visually.
  4. Readability: Is the text easy to read? Watch out for your point size and the font you use. Colour choice is also crucial, making sure that there is enough contrast between the copy and the background.

Layout and composition are the foundations of good insight communication.

The psychology for layout design -
  1. Similarity

We group similar objects to make sense of the world around us. For example, this could be grouping things of similar color, shape, scale, typeface, or even types of information on a page.

  2. Continuation

The eye visually identifies information by following things. For example, we read text best in a line.

  3. Closure

Complete shapes or layouts are the simplest things to improve visual perceptions.

  4. Proximity

The composition of lots of objects manipulates the message of the whole image. If you have text boxes that all relate to each other or are the opposites of each other, the placement is crucial depending on what message you want to give.

  5. Order
There must be an order and hierarchy to your layout. Otherwise, there will be visual anarchy. Therefore, we group types of text into headlines, subheads, and body text. Also, if there are too many groups the audience will get visually lost and won’t be able to decode the meaning of the document.

Week 4 : https://www.creativebloq.com/web-design/grid-theory-41411345

Grid theory

-Grids establish a meter and rhythm

-Define and reflect proportion

-Work with the golden ratio

-provide solid foundation

-Work with other key design principle

Week 5 : https://www.capito.eu/en/how-does-text-design-influence-comprehensibility/

Text design is the field of activity surrounding the structuring and design of a text. The study was conducted by Sabina Sieghart. The design researcher investigated the question of how macrotypography influences the comprehensibility of a text.

Macrotypography is the overall visual impression of a text. This includes, for example:

  • -Font
  • -Font size
  • -Paragraphs
  • -Headings
  • -Alignment
  • -Use of images, tables or graphic elements such as lines, boxes, etc.
  • -Arrangement of elements on the page

Essential elements of book cover design
Title, subtitle, interesting typography, coherent cover design and layout, endorsement, well placed bio, eye-catching spine,

Week 7 : https://www.penguin.co.uk/articles/company-article/how-book-covers-are-designed

About book cover-

A book's cover design is the window into its story, and might be the reason a reader first picks it up. The art of conveying an entire manuscript into a single image, and making sure it's targeting the right audience.
